You only live once (YOLO) but is the fear of missing out (FOMO) affecting your life?!
This week I have had to relook through my diary and seriously consider what I to put my pain ridden pregnant body through.
On Thursday I had debated all day whether I should attend the local antenatal class – to spend the evening in a meeting with other pregnant women, many of whom are feeling very good about their pregancies, filled me with dread. I was willing to push myself emotionally and physically to attend – why?! The fear of missing out. What if there was some valuable informtion that they could give me?! I didn’t want to miss out on that!
Similarly, this week there has been such a buzz around my team who are gearing up for Neal’s Yard Remedies Organic Annual conference. There was an opporunity for me – tickets were suddenly available and boy did I want them! I tried to snap them up, but my husband gently reminded me that the car journey to the Conference, the hours of sitting listening to the speakers, would cause me a great deal of pain…. I know he is right, but why am I so desperate to go?! The fear of missing out. Sometimes we know everyone is going to be really enjoying themselves. We don’t want to miss out on that!
I can also recall over new year there was a particular advertisement that caught my attention, I think it was for a furniture company, but I can’t 100% remember. What I do remember is that it got my mind bussing with thoughts, as it’s main plug was not for the deals, or the furniture but the advert was playing on the fact that as consumers we hate to miss out. “These prices won’t stay this low forever! Visit now or you will miss out!” The fear of missing out.
We all have different things that influence what we decide to do with our time. FOMO makes us act impulsively. There are certain things that need to be considered.
- Can I afford this or will I let the FOMO put me into debt?!
- Is it ‘good’ for me or will the FOMO make me push myself too far?!
- What would else would I be doing with my time?!
It’s a fine balance… You only live once (YOLO) but make good choices before the fear of missing out (FOMO) starts negatively affecting our lives!
